Frequently Asked Questions

At Rockville Psychological Services, we understand the challenges that come with seeking psychological help. That is why we have put together this Frequently Asked Questions page to help make the process as smooth as possible.

Does Rockville Psychological Services offer in-person sessions or telehealth sessions?

Yes! Rockville Psychological Services offers both in person sessions and telehealth sessions. Some individuals appreciate having an in-person connection, while others enjoy having therapy in the privacy of their own space. You are able to choose what will work best for you, and the format can be adjusted at any time.

We offer teletherapy via a HIPAA-compliant platform. However, you must be physically located in one of the following states in order to receive virtual services: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family member?

The difference between talking to a mental health professional and a friend or family member is that a mental health professional has the training and experience to help. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential. You will not have to worry about others “knowing my business.”

3

How to choose a therapist?

The fit between you and your clinician is of the utmost importance. It is vital to the therapeutic relationship that you feel connected to your therapist. Initially, it may be difficult to think about trusting another individual with your personal and private information.  We value the relationship between therapist and patient, and like to provide the opportunity to talk on the phone first before you commit to a first session. If we feel we are a good fit, we will schedule an initial intake evaluation session.

4

What can I expect from therapy?

We will schedule an initial 60 minute intake evaluation session. This initial intake session will be used to gather information to best inform your treatment plan and discuss goals and expectations for treatment. From then, treatment will be customized to you. The most common and effective frequency for ongoing therapy is 45min weekly sessions and can be adjusted as needed.

5

Do you prescribe medication?

We do NOT prescribe medication. Sometimes a combination of medication and psychotherapy offers the best opportunity for treatment outcomes. If we feel that this is the best course of action for you, we can help you connect to a Psychiatrist in the area. If you already have a Psychiatrist, with your permission, we will collaborate closely with them, to ensure continuity of care.
